SUMMERSVILLE, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Nicholas County Schools were closed Thursday, September 12, 2024, following an alleged threat directed at one of the district’s schools.
Superintendent Terrence Beam made the decision to cancel classes, practices, and games for the day as a precaution while the threat was investigated.
According to Beam, it was discovered that several counties in West Virginia received similar threats.
Local law enforcement agencies, including the Nicholas County Sheriff’s Department, Summersville City Police Department, and the State Police, were involved in the investigation.
The Director of Homeland Security and Emergency Management also participated in discussions about the threat.
After evaluating the situation, officials determined that there was no credible danger to students or staff.
As a result, schools in Nicholas County will reopen as scheduled on Friday, September 13, 2024, with additional security measures in place.
Beam emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating that any student or staff member involved in making threats would face severe consequences, including expulsion or termination.
“These threats are no joke,” he said, adding that such actions cause unnecessary concern for the school community.
The investigation remains ongoing, and individuals have been or will be interviewed by police as part of the process, according to Beam.
