CUNARD, WV (LOOTPRESS) – An officer-involved shooting in the community of Cunard has resulted in the death of one individual, according to Fayette County Sheriff Jess McMullen.
Late Monday morning, sheriff’s deputies attempted to serve felony warrants on a male individual in the Cunard area.
Upon the deputies’ arrival, the individual barricaded himself inside his residence and was known to possess at least one firearm.
For nearly an hour, deputies engaged in negotiations, urging the individual to surrender peacefully. In an effort to compel him to exit, tear gas was deployed into the residence.
The individual briefly emerged from his home but attempted to reenter despite commands from the deputies to stay outside.
At this point, the individual brandished a firearm and aimed it at one of the deputies, prompting the deputies to discharge their weapons in response.
Deputies administered first aid and life-saving measures on the scene until emergency medical services arrived.
The individual was pronounced dead at the scene.
The West Virginia State Police is conducting an investigation into the incident.
