CLAIRTON, PA (LOOTPRESS) — An explosion at the U.S. Steel Clairton plant on Monday killed at least one person and injured dozens more, officials confirmed.
Emergency crews were called to the scene shortly before 11 a.m. after the blast occurred inside the “reversing room” of the 13/15 battery, a mechanical regulator that ensures coal bakes evenly in the oven. Several people were reportedly trapped under rubble as rescue operations continued throughout the day.
UPMC officials confirmed two patients were taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital, while Allegheny Health Network reported multiple patients were being treated at its hospitals.
Gov. Josh Shapiro and Lt. Gov. Austin Davis said the state is coordinating with local authorities, and both the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency and State Police have offered assistance.
Sen. John Fetterman confirmed at least one fatality, urging residents to avoid the area and follow instructions from local officials.
Clairton Mayor Richard Lattanzi called the incident a tragedy for the steel town.
“The mill is such a big part of Clairton,” Lattanzi told KDKA-TV. “You go to work every day expecting to come home healthy. Some people won’t be able to see their husband, son, or loved one come home today. It’s a sad day for Clairton.”
