BERKELEY COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A motorcyclist was killed Thursday night in a fiery crash in Berkeley County, according to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were dispatched at approximately 9:15 p.m. April 23 to the 10300 block of Winchester Avenue following reports of a traffic collision involving injuries.
Responding deputies, identified as Deputy Merson, Deputy Miller and Sgt. Ritchie, were advised that a motorcycle traveling northbound at speeds exceeding 130 miles per hour had left the roadway and struck a parked pickup truck.
Callers also reported that both vehicles caught fire.
Emergency crews arrived and worked to extinguish the flames. After the fire was brought under control, responders located the motorcyclist, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Preliminary findings indicate the motorcycle was being operated at an extremely high rate of speed and in a reckless manner prior to the crash.
Authorities said the condition of the victim has delayed a positive identification. Investigators believe the individual was the registered owner and sole operator of the motorcycle.
Deputies have contacted the person’s family, but the identity is being withheld pending confirmation.
The investigation remains ongoing and is being led by Accident Reconstructionist Sgt. Ritchie.
Chief Deputy Eric Burnett said, “Speed continues to be a major contributing factor in serious and fatal crashes. This marks the second motorcycle fatality in our county within a week’s time. We urge all motorists to slow down, remain alert, and exercise caution while operating on our roadways to help prevent further tragedies.”
The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office is also asking for the public’s help in reporting criminal activity.
