MORGANTOWN, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Former West Virginia University football standout Pat White is returning to his alma mater as the assistant quarterbacks coach and assistant to the head coach, WVU head coach Rich Rodriguez announced.
“It’s really special to welcome Pat White back to Morgantown as a member of our football coaching staff,” Rodriguez said.
“He has been involved in some of the biggest wins in program history, and he will be a great presence in our quarterback room. Pat and I have been through so much together, and I am really proud of the quality of coach and mentor to young players that he has become.”
White joins the WVU staff after spending two years as an offensive assistant coach with the Los Angeles Chargers, followed by a year as an athlete/skill trainer and coach.
While with the Chargers, he worked with both the quarterbacks and wide receivers, helping the team secure the No. 2 passing offense in the NFL and a playoff berth.
His coaching resume also includes stints as the pass game coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Campbell (2022), interim offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Alabama State (2021), running backs coach at USF (2020), and quarterbacks coach at Alcorn State (2018-19).
As a player, White was one of the most dynamic quarterbacks in college football history. He became the first quarterback to start and win four consecutive bowl games from 2005-08, leading the Mountaineers to victories in the 2006 Sugar Bowl, 2007 Gator Bowl, 2008 Fiesta Bowl, and 2008 Meineke Car Care Bowl.
The Daphne, Alabama, native set 19 WVU, Big East, and national records, including finishing as the all-time leading rushing quarterback in NCAA history with 4,480 yards (now second).
He led WVU to a 35-8 record as a starter and set Big East records for touchdowns responsible for (103) and total offense (10,529). He was also the first player in Big East history to throw for more than 10,000 yards, posting a 7-2 record against Top 25 opponents.
White was drafted in the second round of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins, playing one season in Miami before signing with the Washington Redskins in 2013. He also spent time in the Canadian Football League with the Edmonton Eskimos in 2014 before retiring from professional football in 2015.
A talented multi-sport athlete, White was drafted by Major League Baseball teams four times, including selections by the Anaheim Angels (2004), Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (2007), Cincinnati Reds (2008), and New York Yankees (2009).
A member of the WVU Sports Hall of Fame, White graduated from WVU in 2008 with a Regents Bachelor of Arts degree. He and his wife, Cristina, have four children: daughters Daphne and Clara, and sons Pat II and Dubois.
