Phyllis Earline (Blackmon) Shrewsbury, 67, of Flat Top, WV, passed away on November 20, 2022, at Bowers Hospice House after a short illness.
She was born on April 20, 1955, to Billy and Earline (Neal) Blackmon in Portsmouth, VA, where she graduated high school in 1972. She graduated from Freewill Baptist Bible College in Nashville, TN, in 1976.
After graduating, she taught at Mt. Calvary Christian School in Hookerton, NC, until she married Dan Shrewsbury in 1985. After marriage, she taught at Mercer Christian Academy, in Princeton, WV, for two years. In 1992, following the births of her first two children, Phyllis began teaching at Victory Baptist Academy, in Beaver, WV, where she taught until her death. She enjoyed working in the summers at Blueberry Hill, in Flat Top, WV, just up the road from her home.
Phyllis loved her West Virginia life. She embraced life on the farm, which she always described as “going to camp.” She loved the snow, her flowers, taking care of her animals, and experiencing four full seasons. She always had a song in her heart that she willingly shared with anyone around, especially her students. Teaching was Phyllis’s passion and one of her favorite hobbies. Anyone who had Mrs. Shrews as a teacher remembers a year full of reading and singing. She masterfully combined learning and having fun. Her family and church family provided Phyllis with her closest friends. Two years ago, she became a grandma and excelled at loving her two grandbabies with sweet patience and kindness. Her quiet, joyful demeanor encouraged everyone she touched.
She is survived by her husband Dan Shrewsbury; her mother Earline Blackmon; her brother Patrick Blackmon and his wife Tammy; her children Clint Shrewsbury; Kelly Brown and her husband Jake, their children Hallie and Elsie; and Carrie Ordway and her husband Garett. Additionally, she is survived by many loved members of her extended family.
She was preceded in death by her father Billy Blackmon and her mother-in-law Doris Shrewsbury.
Daniel Stump, Donald Thomas, Josh Shackleford, Mark Fizer, Phillip Young, and Sam Childers will serve as pallbearers.
