Prep Football: Oliveros and Isaac explode, lead Summers past PikeView

Hinton – Ryan Oliveros has played almost everywhere during his high school career. He played some QB last year when Brandan Isaac was hurt and has bounced from running back to wide receiver.

Which position does he play best? Thursday’s showing would indicate whichever one he chooses.

The speedy senior slipped through PikeView’s defense, accumulating 254 yards and four touchdowns from scrimmage as the Bobcats bashed the Panthers 47-22 at Garten Stadium.

Oliveros split his production evenly, rushing for 111 yards on seven carries and turning seven catches into 143 yards, scoring two touchdowns each through the air and on the ground.

“I knew after halftime they were going to double me so I went to the single receiver side and I just ate,” Oliveros said. “They had nobody that could really guard me in single coverage all night.”

The amount of bodies pursuing Oliveros seemed moot before and after halftime as proven by his first score. A Ā throw to Oliveros on a bubble route resulted in four broken tackles as the senior navigated a sea of bodies across 45 yards to cap an eight-play, 72-yard drive with a the game’s first score.

“He’s a tough player,” PikeView coach Jason Spears said of Oliveros. “We did everything we could to prepare for that, we just didn’t execute. We made changes we thought would benefit us and he swept right between us through all that and we’ve just got to break down and make that tackle.”

To the Panthers’ credit they regroup and launched their own assault, marching 62 yards in 10 plays with the highlight coming on a Braiden Mullins 35-yard strike to Corbin Justice. Two plays later Peyton Mounts found paydirt to even the score at 6-6 but mistakes and missed opportunities in each half cost PikeView throughout the evening.

A 40-yard touchdown pass from Isaac to Ayden Plumley on a fourth-and-24 in the second quarter and a PikeView fumble on the Summers goal line in the third were the two most demoralizing players for the visitors, taking a potential score off the board while giving the Bobcats an unlikely one.

“On that play, the fourth down, that was my (fault),” PikeView coach Jason Spears admitted. “I switched because with Chase Mounts he does a great job in pursuit and everything else but I will take that. The problem is we had a letdown. We kind of gave up and got in our emotions and we cannot do that. We’ve got to be better than that. We’ve got to play the full game and play hard and you don’t let your emotions take control of that.”

Isaac and Oliveros continued to tag team the Panthers throughout the first half with the latter’s 13-yard rush giving the hosts a 20-6 advantage at the break.

Tyson Adkins joined in on the action with a rushing score that helped extend the advantage to 27-6 before the aforementioned fumble suffocated PikeView’s hopes. They were further dashed when Oliveros ducked and dodged through the Panther defense en route to a 52-yard rushing score on the following drive, adding his fourth score in the fourth quarter on a 39-yard pass from Isaac.

While Oliveros shined, Isaac conducted the offense efficiently, completing 11 passes for 224 yards and three touchdowns while also picking up 55 yards and a touchdown on five carries.

“We’ll never go away from wing-T – we’re a power run team,” Summers County head coach Josh Evans said. “Having some of the guys we have healthy right now though you can do some things in the spread. Having Isaac back at QB works a lot and it’s great. When you have a weapon like Ryan on the outside and Plumley, you can do a lot of cool things. You’ll see a lot of wing-t but we’ve been working on this all summer and you’ll see a lot of it.”

It was the first time Spears and Co. played against Summers’ spread attack, but it was something they planned for having scouted the Bobcats beforehand.

“We watched game film on it,” Spears said. “We told the boys ‘You gotta respect it but you’ve got to stop it.’ I’d say we were down at the end and that’s just one thing about it, we have to have control of ourselves.”

Peyton Mounts accumulated 141 of PikeView’s 293 rushing yards, scoring twice. Summers picked up 463 yards of total offense with 239 yards coming on the ground.
