RALEIGH COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – With dangerous heat and humidity affecting West Virginia, the Raleigh County Public Library is reminding residents they can escape the extreme temperatures by using the library as a cooling center.
The library, located at 221 N. Kanawha St. in Beckley, opens daily at 9 a.m. and offers air conditioning, cool drinking water, books, computers, Wi-Fi, and restroom facilities for anyone needing relief from the heat.
The announcement comes as Heat Advisories and Extreme Heat Warnings remain in effect across portions of West Virginia, with the National Weather Service warning that heat index values could climb above 100 degrees in many areas and exceed 105 degrees in some locations through the week.
The prolonged heat, combined with warm overnight temperatures, increases the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly for older adults, young children, those with chronic medical conditions, and people who work outdoors.
Officials encourage residents to stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, wear lightweight clothing, and seek air-conditioned locations whenever possible.
