WEST VIRGINIA (LOOTPRESS) – Shelley Moore Capito has won the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate in West Virginia, defeating several challengers in Tuesday’s GOP primary election.
Capito, who is seeking a third term in the Senate, defeated a field of Republican opponents that included state Sen. Tom Willis of Berkeley County.
Capito first won election to the U.S. Senate in 2014, becoming the first female senator in West Virginia history.
Before joining the Senate, she served in the U.S. House of Representatives for more than a decade. She also comes from a prominent West Virginia political family, as her late father, Arch Moore Jr., served as governor and as a congressman.
During the campaign, Capito highlighted her endorsement from President Donald Trump, saying she was honored to have his support as she worked to protect West Virginia jobs, strengthen border security, and lower costs for families.
West Virginia has become a heavily Republican state in recent election cycles, with Trump carrying the state by a wide margin in the 2024 presidential election.
Capito will now advance to the general election in November, where political analysts currently view the race as strongly favoring Republicans.
