(LOOTPRESS) – State coal production increased from the previous week by +3.37%, with production from the NAPP region of the state increasing by +6.2%. Production from the state’s CAPP region decreased slightly week over week by -1%. Year to date, state coal production is up by +15.2% compared to the same 23 weeks in 2020: +30.9% in the state’s NAPP region while production is off by -1.4% in the CAPP region of the state.
National coal production declined week over week by -2.3%, with production declining in both the Western and Interior coal regions. Production increased in the Appalachian basin by +1.3% from last week. Year to date, national coal production is up by +7.5% compared to the same time in 2020. Production from the Western coal region is up +5.5%, and +8.3% in the Interior coal region. Production from the Appalachian coal basin is up +11.6% from the same time in 2020.
Production from the entire NAPP thermal region increased by +4.7% from last week and implied national met production decreased week over by -4.5%. Year to date, production from the NAPP thermal region is up by +20% compared to the same 23 weeks in 2020. Implied national met production is up by +1.1% from the same 23 weeks in 2020.
EIA spot prices for thermal coal were unchanged from the previous week. Average natural gas prices increased by +3.9% week over week.
Domestic iron and steel production increased slightly from last week by +0.2%. Furnace capacity utilization increased by +0.9% week over week.
National electric generation decreased from the previous week by -4.4%. Output in the New England, Mid-Atlantic and Southeast regions declined by -7.4% week over week. Output in the Central Industrial region declined by -5.2%.
U.S. rail traffic declined week over week by -7.7% (+13.5% year to date compared to 2020). Coal carloads declined by -2.3% (+8% year to date compared to 2020), steel raw materials and finished steel traffic decreased by -4.% (+19% year to date compared to 2020) and finished autos and auto parts traffic declined by almost -14% (+29.9% year to date compared to 2020).
