BLUEFIELD, WV (LOOTPRESS) – On August 30, 2024, during the Bluefield High School vs. Graham High School football game at Mitchell Stadium, a 14-year-old girl was assaulted, leading to severe injuries and charges against a 19-year-old man.
Patrolman R.L. Hamm responded to the incident after receiving reports of the assault. Upon arrival, Hamm spoke with the victim, who reported being involved in a physical altercation with another 14-year-old girl. During the fight, a 19-year-old boyfriend, identified as Nahayviaz Brooks, allegedly intervened by grabbing the 14-year-old victim and violently slamming her to the ground. The victim claimed that Brooks then punched her multiple times in the head before fleeing the scene with the other underage girl before law enforcement’s arrival.
A video provided by a bystander partially corroborated the victim’s account, showing Brooks grabbing her before the camera view was blocked by people attempting to break up the altercation.
The victim sustained significant injuries, including a large hematoma on her head, bruising under both eyes and a cut under her left eye. Officer Hamm noted the size and weight disparity between the victim and Brooks, who weighs around 230 pounds, and determined that Brooks’ actions fit the criteria for Malicious Assault on a person under 16 near a school under West Virginia law (§61-2-9B).
Although emergency medical personnel responded, the victim and her mother declined hospital treatment due to a lack of health insurance. Brooks is now facing charges for his role in the assault and remains under investigation.
