UPDATE: MCDOWELL COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Lootpress is learning more details about a tragic ATV crash that left two North Carolina firefighters dead in West Virginia.
The McDowell County Sheriff’s Department confirms to Lootpress that the fatal ATV crash happened on Friday, June 21, 2024, just before 7 pm. The driver, Daniel Sell, and passenger, Jacob Steele, were traveling on Country Rt 17, further known as Cherokee Road, in the Northfork area of McDowell County, when tragedy struck.
The side-by-side left Rt. 17 and stopped approximately 35 feet over a hill and into a creek.
Deputies say speed was a cause, and neither occupant had DOT-approved helmets. They also were not wearing seatbelts.
Both families were notified on the same date as the accident.
Earlier this morning, the Town of Cleveland’s Facebook page reported that both men were firefighters from the Rowan-Iredell Fire Department.
