PRINCETON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Music lovers and vinyl enthusiasts throughout the Mountain State flocked to their favorite record stores over the weekend for Record Store Day 2022.
The annual event, which is held to celebrate the culture of record collecting and independent stores, took place on Saturday, April 23 this year, and was, by all accounts, a tremendous success.
Cheap Thrills Records of Princeton – the sister store of what was previously the Beckley, WV location, which recently relocated to Bristol, VA – had an extensive line of customers lined up outside the store before the doors even opened.
“Cheap Thrills Records has participated in Record Store Day, or RSD, since the very beginning,” says Cheap Thrills Records founder Wyatt Lilly. “This year there [were] some great releases from superstar artists, including Taylor Swift, Prince, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Who, Stevie Nicks, Pearl Jam, and many more.”
The limited edition Record Store Day Exclusive releases are scant in distribution, with often only a few copies of each in-demand release being allocated to each store. As such, the motivation for collectors to get to their favorites early is generally quite high.
Many in-demand RSD releases – such as a silver variant of the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ newest album Unlimited Love, and a re-released remix album from Britpop act Blur, Bustin’ + Dronin’ – had departed the Cheap Thrills shelves entirely by noon on Saturday.
“Everything is made in strictly limited quantities and only pressed one time, so when they’re gone they’re gone!,” said Lilly, emphasizing the exclusivity which provides the event with a healthy dose of excitement each year.
Cheap Thrills’ brand new Bristol, VA location recently became operational, and hosted a swarm of Record Store Day customers of its own. But the outfit has not forgotten its roots in the City of Beckley, where it operated for over 20 years.
“We are so lucky to have two sets of great customers to support our shops,” Lilly declared. “Thank you to everyone from Beckley that came to the Princeton shop today!”
