(LOOTPRESS) – West Virginia American Water is raising awareness about the proper disposal of fats, oils, and grease (FOGs) to help residents protect their plumbing and wastewater systems. Improper disposal of FOGs can lead tosevere blockages, costly repairs, and potential health and environmental hazards
When FOGs are rinsed down the sink, they cool and harden, forming a thick sludge that adheres to pipes. This buildup can eventually cause blockages and backups in plumbing systems. Even dishwashing detergents and garbage disposals are ineffective in breaking down these substances, making proper disposal essential.
To help prevent plumbing issues, West Virginia American Water offers the following tips:
- Never rinse FOGs down the drain. Garbage disposals cannot prevent these materials from sticking to your pipes.
- Strain it, don’t drain it. Use a basket or strainer in your drain to catch food scraps and dispose of them in the trash.
- Let’s talk trash. Scrape leftover food scraps and FOGs from plates, pots, and utensils into the trash before washing them.
By following these simple practices, residents can safeguard their plumbing systems and avoid potential problems.
