CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The West Virginia Department of Health (DH) is excited to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC).
Since its establishment in 1974, WIC has been vital in providing essential nutrition support to vulnerable mothers and young children across the state.
To mark this significant milestone, DH’s Office of Nutrition Services (ONS) cordially invites the community to join a celebration at Ritter Park in Huntington on Monday, July 29, 2024.
The event will feature program enrollment, family-friendly games and activities, informational booths, and a pop-up farmers’ market to recognize WIC’s impact on West Virginia families.
Heidi Staats, Director of the Office of Nutrition Services, expressed, “We are honored to commemorate 50 years of aiding West Virginia families. We hope you will join us as we continue strengthening this program and paving the way for healthier futures.”
During the celebration, there will be a press conference with comments from Dr. Matthew Christiansen, State Health Officer, and other guests, emphasizing the pivotal role of the program and its impact on families.
Dr. Christiansen highlighted, “The WIC program reflects our dedication to promoting family health. Over the last five decades, WIC has significantly impacted the lives of over 1.8 million West Virginians by providing crucial support during critical developmental stages.”
The celebration at Ritter Park will kick off at 3:00 p.m. and is open to the public. Families and community partners are encouraged to participate in honoring the program’s legacy in the state.
