CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Under the direction of Governor Patrick Morrisey, the West Virginia National Guard (WVNG) has been activated to assist local food banks and pantries across the state with logistical and personnel support.
The activation aims to help mitigate the impact of the temporary suspension of SNAP benefits due to a lapse in federal appropriations affecting vulnerable populations.

“We stand ready to support our state partner agencies, local food banks and non-profit organizations with critical logistical support to keep food on the table for West Virginia families,” said WVNG Adjutant General Maj. Gen. Jim Seward.
Governor Morrisey authorized the activation of 200 or more service members under State Active Duty status to aid in the effort.
The WVNG has a long record of supporting West Virginians during times of crisis, including food distribution efforts in natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Point us at a task, no matter how small or difficult,” Maj. Gen. Seward said, “and our Soldiers and Airmen can get it done.”
The Guard is coordinating with several partner agencies and non-profits, including Facing Hunger Food Bank, Mountaineer Food Bank, the West Virginia Department of Agriculture, West Virginia 211, and the West Virginia Department of Human Services.
Officials say these collaborations will create a cohesive network of support for residents across the state.
The WVNG’s responsibilities may include receiving, sorting, packaging, and distributing food; managing traffic and crowds; providing transportation and storage support; and ensuring safe, orderly, and dignified distribution.
Governor Morrisey called upon residents, businesses, churches, and community organizations to donate directly to Facing Hunger Food Bank and Mountaineer Food Bank.
