CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – West Virginia Mac Warner is working with county clerks to prepare WV for National Poll Worker Recruitment Day, which is set for August 1.
West Virginia has once again collaborated with county clerks, the U.S. Elections Assistance Commission (EAC), and other states for a national initiative to recruit poll workers for the 2024 General Election.
Secretary of State Mac Warner stated that National Poll Worker Recruitment Day aims to address the ongoing need for poll workers and promote civic engagement. Warner’s administration has received national recognition for its efforts in the past seven years, partnering with veteran’s groups, the WV Board of Realtors, and students to recruit poll workers.
Secretary Warner emphasized the importance of poll workers in facilitating the election process and building voter confidence. He stressed the necessity of fully staffing polling places with trained poll workers to ensure accessible, safe, and accurate elections.
Since 2020, the WV Secretary of State’s Office has collaborated with the EAC and other stakeholders to promote National Poll Worker Recruitment Day and encourage registered voters to volunteer as poll workers for early voting and election day.
West Virginia currently has 1,704 voting precincts, requiring over 8,000 poll workers to effectively manage these precincts on election day. Secretary Warner highlighted that being a paid poll worker is a meaningful way to engage in democracy within West Virginia. He emphasized the importance of having trained poll workers at polling places to ensure secure and confidential voting free from influence or intimidation.
Increasing the number of poll workers to assist voters remains a priority for the Secretary of State’s Office and county clerks. Poll workers in West Virginia must be registered voters, and those who volunteer in their home county receive compensation determined by the county commission.
Secretary Warner urged registered West Virginia voters interested in becoming poll workers for the upcoming November 5 General Election to complete the Poll Worker Application by August 1.
