ELKINS, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Randolph County Schools has issued a warning to students and parents following reports of a dangerous TikTok trend that encourages students to tamper with school-issued Chromebooks.
According to school officials, the trend involves students inserting metal objects such as thumbtacks, paperclips, or even pencil lead into the USB ports of Chromebooks.
This act can cause the devices to short-circuit, leading to smoke, potential battery ignition, and fire hazards.
Similar incidents have already led to school evacuations and emergency responses in other states.
The district emphasized that any student caught engaging in this behavior will face immediate and serious consequences.
In addition to legal repercussions, students will also be subject to disciplinary action within the school system, which may include suspension or possible expulsion.
School officials are urging parents to speak with their children about the risks associated with participating in harmful online trends.
