CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) — West Virginia schools and districts are continuing to make progress, according to the 2024–2025 Balanced Scorecard results released Tuesday by the West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE).
The Balanced Scorecard measures public school performance across areas such as academic achievement, student growth, attendance, and post-secondary readiness. It provides families, communities, and stakeholders with an annual snapshot of school performance.
According to this year’s data, 86% of districts improved in English language arts (ELA) and 83% improved in math. Attendance also showed positive momentum, with 76% of districts reporting gains, bringing the statewide chronic absenteeism rate down to 22.8%.
The WVDE noted that testing participation remains strong, with more than 98% of public school students completing the required state assessments last year.
Career Technical Education
The WVDE Office of Career Technical Education reported that students achieved a 68% passage rate on the 2024–2025 NOCTI exams, which measure workplace readiness across 16 career clusters. That represents a 4% increase from the previous year.
Homeschool Assessments
Assessment submissions among homeschooled students also improved. Families of students in grades 3, 5, 8, and 11 are required by law to submit an assessment or portfolio by June 30 each year. In 2024–2025, 67% of homeschooled students submitted assessments, up 9% from the previous year.
