MOUNT NEBO, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The Wilderness Volunteer Fire Department (WVFD) has announced the establishment of a second fire station in the Mount Nebo area.
This new facility aims to improve emergency response times, public safety services, and even reduce homeowner insurance rates for local residents and travelers.
Founded in 1994, the WVFD originally operated from a single station in Mount Lookout, serving the communities of Mount Lookout, Mount Nebo, Pool, Runa, and Nallen.
However, shifts in volunteer firefighting dynamics and a decline in membership have made response times to certain areas, such as Mount Nebo, increasingly challenging.
Currently, Mount Nebo firefighters must travel to Mount Lookout to retrieve emergency equipment before returning to their community.
The new station, which is expected to open by November 7, 2024, is made possible by a partnership with Go-Mart, which generously provided land for its construction.
Once operational, the station will house essential fire and rescue vehicles, allowing the department to split resources between the two stations to improve response times and service coverage.
“The significance of this new station cannot be overstated,” said Noah Allen, Fire Chief of WVFD. “It will enable us to provide faster, more efficient emergency services and improve safety for our entire community, including travelers along US 19. This project will ultimately save lives, reduce property damage, and enhance overall public safety.”
In addition to improved response times, the station’s proximity may help lower homeowner and business insurance rates, as many residents in Mount Nebo will now live within five miles of a fire station—an essential factor in insurance calculations.
The WVFD will hold an open house and dedication ceremony on Sunday, November 24, 2024, from 2 to 3 PM at the new station, located on Go-Mart’s property at 2014 Old Mount Nebo Road, Mount Nebo, WV 26679.
