William Royal, Jr., a resident of Glen Burnie, Maryland (formerly of Bluefield), peacefully transitioned from this life on September 5, 2023. Known affectionately by various nicknames – “Fats,” “Fat Sam,” “June,” and “Junior” – he was born on September 28, 1937, in Giatto, West Virginia, to the late William “Willie” Royal and Gladys Deberry McDonald.
June received his education in both Mercer County and Tazewell County Schools. In 1956, he embarked on a journey with the United States Air Force upon completing his education, and he honorably discharged in 1964.
Upon returning to his roots in Bluefield after his military service, June encountered and wedded the love of his life, the late Dorothy Mae Hicks, in 1967. In 2002, he concluded over 30 years of dedicated employment with Norfolk Southern, where he served as both a brakeman and conductor.
June was lively and joyous, a true family man at heart. He had a passion for sports, encompassing a love for golf, tennis, as well as unwavering support for his beloved Los Angeles Lakers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and New York Mets. He also enjoyed card games and was fond of participating in the lottery, with a penchant for scratch-off tickets.
June will be remembered for his infectious laughter and warm hugs. He leaves behind a legacy of love in the hearts of his five children: William Bailey of Bluefield, Kimberly (Boyto) Nottage of Pasadena, Maryland, Annalisa and Bryan Royal, both of whom reside in Glen Burnie, Maryland, and Antoinette Brooks of Odenton, Maryland. Additionally, he cherished a special daughter of the heart, Marcella Martin of Laurel, Maryland. His memory lives on through eight grandchildren: Christopher, Ashley, Stephen, Aleya, Myah, Kaylee, Kiara, and Kyeisha and one great-grandson, Rudy IV, a loving sister-in-law, Nancy Pride of Bluefield, a beloved cousin Wincey Recard of Salem, Virginia, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Services to honor June will be held on Monday, September 18, 2023, at Restlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will host a visitation from 10-11 in the chapel, followed by a memorial service from 11-12. Flowers and expressions of condolences may be sent to Seavers Funeral Services of Princeton.
