CRAB ORCHARD, WV (LOOTPRESS) — A woman was arrested Sunday, April 13, after officers discovered she was allegedly driving under the influence with her infant in the vehicle.
According to the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy I. Hashimura responded to a disturbance report in the 200 block of Washington Avenue in Crab Orchard. Dispatchers advised that a female had reportedly left the area intoxicated, possibly with an infant, in a white Chevy Blazer with a broken rear window.
Officer Lilly of the Sophia Police Department spotted a vehicle matching that description in the 1400 block of Robert C. Byrd Drive. The vehicle was reportedly swerving and had a delayed response to emergency lights. A traffic stop was conducted in the 300 block of Midway Road.
The driver was identified as Makayla Crump. Officers observed her holding a three-month-old child in the back seat. The child’s car seat was found to be improperly secured and tipping over. Crump reportedly exhibited slurred speech, watery and bloodshot eyes, and the smell of alcohol.
Field sobriety tests were conducted, during which several signs of impairment were observed. A preliminary breath test revealed a blood alcohol concentration of .157%. She was taken into custody without incident.
The infant’s grandmother arrived on the scene to take custody of the child, and the vehicle was towed. At the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office, Crump consented to a secondary chemical test, which returned a BAC of .124%.
Crump is charged with driving under the influence and child neglect creating risk of serious bodily injury. She was transported to Southern Regional Jail to await arraignment.
