West Virginia coal production declined slightly week over week by -0.3%, with production from the state’s NAPP region slipping by -0.12%. Production in the CAPP region of the state declined by -0.8%. National coal production also decreased from the previous week by -0.8%. Coal production from the entire Appalachian region decreased by -0.43%. Production in the entire NAPP thermal region decreased by -0.32% week over week. Implied national met production declined by -0.56% from the previous week.
Year to date, West Virginia coal production is down by -5.9% from the same time last year- production from the state’s NAPP region is up by +4.7% from the same time in 2020. Coal production from the CAPP region of the state is off by -16.6% from the same time in 2020. National coal production is down by -3.8% from 2020. Production in the entire NAPP thermal region is down by -6.7% and implied national met production is off by -10.7% year to date compared to 2020.
Thermal coal prices were unchanged from the previous week. Average natural gas prices increased by +11.8% week over week.
Domestic iron and steel production increased week over week by +0.5% with furnace capacity utilization increasing by +0.5%. Compared to the same time last year, U.S. iron and steel production is up +0.14%, with cumulative capacity utilization increasing by +4.47%.
U.S. electric output decreased slightly week over week by -0.65%, with output from the New England, Mid-Atlantic and Southeast regions increasing by +0.79%. Generation in the Central Industrial Region increased by +0.72% week over week. Total coal region generation declined by -0.47% from the previous week.
U.S. rail traffic increased week over week by almost +4%. Coal carloads decreased by decreased by -0.8% from the previous week.
