BECKLEY, W.V. (LOOTPRESS) – WVU Tech is offering a summer basketball camp for local kids.
Children ages eight to 14 will be able to participate in the camp, which will showcase a variety of basketball fundamentals for the kids to learn.
Golden Bears Head Coach James Long will be hosting the event alongside several members of the WVU Tech Men’s Basketball team.
Lootpress spoke to Coach Long, who focused on several aspects of the upcoming event, such as how it feels to host the camp, the struggles to make it happen, what the camp means to the community and how Tech has worked to be able to offer a camp like this one.
“I feel great leading up to the camp,” Long said. “Summer is a time for camps. We are getting prepared from our end to be organized so that everyone can come in and have a great time.”
We were hoping to do camps all summer from the time we got here, but, unfortunately, COVID hit in our first summer here. This is one of our favorite times of the year. I love camps because kids are coming to learn out of love for the game. Their joy keeps me going and reminds me of why I started playing the game.”
Long continued, stating that the school and his team have a love for the Beckley community and its children and are looking forward to coaching them this summer.
“We always say care with everything we do and care about people around the school and city is really important to us. Our guys are very excited to give back and teach the game to anyone coming to learn at our camps.”
This is a great opportunity for us to get to know the families of Beckley. Our guys do things the right way and will be great in the community. This is an exciting time that we are greatly looking forward to.”
The camp will take place in WVU Tech’s Van Meter Gym and will be held in two different sessions: one from June 7 through July 10 and another from July 26 through July 29. Only 40 players will be allowed at each camp session, so the university is asking for those interested to sign up as soon as possible.
