NEW YORK, NY (LOOTPRESS) – Zohran Mamdani has won the election for New York City mayor, according to projections, defeating independent former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa.
Mamdani, 34, a democratic socialist and state assemblymember, achieved a stunning victory after beginning the race as a long-shot candidate.
Polling at just 18% in March, he gained momentum in the final weeks and went on to win the Democratic primary with 43.8% of the vote.
His campaign focused on affordability, calling for fast and free public buses, universal child care, and a rent freeze for stabilized housing units.
Mamdani’s social-media-driven campaign and progressive platform attracted national attention and endorsements from Gov. Kathy Hochul, Sen. Bernie Sanders, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Critics questioned his lack of executive experience, warned his policies could drive wealthy residents out of the city, and criticized his positions on Israel.
Mamdani is the youngest person to be elected mayor of New York City in more than a century, as well as the city’s first Muslim and first immigrant mayor in modern history.
