ALDERSON, W.V. (LOOTPRESS) – A local summer reading and nutrition program is working to make a difference in their community. Team members with Energy Express in Greenbrier County recently completed several beautification projects in Alderson where they are headquartered.
According to Jim Snyder, Greenbrier County Energy Express Community Coordinator, Energy Express is a summer reading and nutrition program for children living in West Virginia’s rural and low-income communities. Through its six-week program, Energy Express encourages children to read, gives them two meals a day and lets them participate in educational activities.
Aside from helping the children of Greenbrier County, the Energy Express team is also required to complete several projects in their community.
“It’s not a requirement that we approach hesitantly,” Snyder said. “It’s something that we really jump into with both feet. We love doing that kind of stuff because this isn’t a job for us. This is a service that we do.”
Last week the team completed two projects. First, they spent a day cleaning the Alderson Library storage shed. According to Snyder, the shed was crammed full of items that needed sorted through and reorganized. They then made their way to the Alderson Elementary School, where they washed and refurbished the old bell in front of the property. They also pressure-washed the brick pillars holding the bell and the rock Alderson School sign.
Snyder said he and his team were happy to complete the projects and help make their home a brighter place.
“We just like to contribute to the community that we serve. It’s about that service to the community. When we leave, hopefully, we leave it better than we found it.”
