CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – One of the world’s largest LEGO fan events made its return to the Mountain State over the weekend, as the BrickUniverse LEGO Fan Festival brought creators and fans alike to the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center
Taking place in four event blocks over the course of two days, the expo featured award-winning artists and creators, brick merchants, and loads of exhibits for guests to enjoy.
With events being held from 10:00am to 1:00pm and 2:00pm to 5:00pm on both Saturday and Sunday, fans were presented with a number of opportunities to meet and mingle with some of their favorite creators, as well as buy and or/sell collections of their own.
Upon entering the expo, guests were treated to an extensive display of work from award-winning LEGO artist Paul Hetherington, including various Batman-themed works such as Batman, Joker’s I Scream Factory and Batman vs Joker, Gotham Theatre Showdown, as well as works depicting iconic figures such as Pac-Man, and even Prince.
Just beyond, NASA-themed exhibits from Lia Chan could be seen, including a stunning recreation of the Kennedy Space Center Launch.
A sprawling display of cityscapes from acclaimed LEGO artist and author Jonathan Lopes followed, and featured detailed assemblies of iconic structures such as Grand Central Terminal, and even an 8-foot replica of the Woolworth Building.
Lopes’ book, New York City Brick by Brick: The Art of LEGO Construction, originally published in 2019, sees the artist exploring the architecture of the city that never sleeps through meticulous reconstructions by way of LEGO creations. The book was featured at the event, and autographed copies were available for purchase.
Elsewhere, brilliant mosaic pieces by E.J. Bocan III were displayed along the back wall. These vivid creations featured arresting displays of such iconic characters as Mario, Mickey Mouse, and Grogu – more commonly known as Baby Yoda – among others.
But striking visuals were not all these pieces had to offer, as many of the works, when observed from various angles, would display completely different images altogether.
One Spider-Man mosaic served as an excellent example for this interplay between angles and light. While a viewing of the piece from the left provided a clear, red image of the classic costumed hero, a shift to the right would bring into focus a menacing, black display of the fan-favorite anti-hero Venom.
Dozens of merchant booths also brought a wealth of variety to the proceedings, and several established Building Zones gave attendees the chance to flex their own creative muscles and manifest some personal creations.
The BrickUniverse Lego Fan Festival was a notable hit over the weekend, and it’s only one of several exciting events making its way to Charleston this summer. More information and additional LOOTPRESS coverage of upcoming events at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center can be found here.
