Daniels – Monday on the Cobb Course at The Resort at Glade Springs, 63 golfers battled the rain looking to earn one of the 18 qualifying spots available in the 104th WV Amateur Championship.
The WV Amateur Championship will once again be played at The Greenbrier for the 97th time.
Aided by three birdies and an eagle, former Wyoming East standout Brett Laxton navigated the 18-hole layout at even par 72 to take low medalist honors, five shots clear of second place.
Among the qualifiers were former Class AAA state champion Zan Hill from Beckley and former first team all-stater Jack Hayes from Oak Hill. Hill played this year at Concord University, while Hayes teed it up for Fairmont State.
The remaining qualifiers included Mark Queens (Huntington), David Cassis (Fayetteville), Wes Duncan (Daniels), Tanner Dorsey (Huntington), Seth Kinker (Daniels), Aaron Kemlock (Fayetteville), Ben Palmer (Parkersburg), Christian Ward (Beckley), Landon Perry (Shady Spring), Tyler Farley (Crab Orchard), Cole Burgess (Bluefield), Chris Daniels (Beckley), Brandon Tinney (Shady Spring), Case Tolliver (Bluefield) and Patrick McCune (Princeton).
Two alternate spots were awarded also with Nathan Daniels (Beckley) earning the first alternate spot and David Woodrum (Bluefield) was the second alternate.
The exempt players include all past champions and the top 25 players from the 2022 WV Am. Those players include Noah Mullens, Cam Roam, Davey Jude, Nick Dent, Ryan Bilby, Cameron Jarvis, Pat Carter, Brian Anania, Cory Hoshor, Christian McKisic, Jonathan Clark, Sam O’Dell, Christian Boyd, Joseph Kalaskey, Mitchell Lehigh, Nick Fleming, Jacob Nickell, Woody Woodward, Carson Proffitt, Jackson Hill, Mitch Hoffman, Tanner Vest, Chandler Beavers, Jess Ferrell and Todd Duncan.
Mullens edged Roam and Jude by two shots to capture the 2022 crown.
Three more qualifying rounds with be played which will include Locust Hill (May 17), Guyan Golf and Country Club (May 22) and “The Last Chance Qualifier” at Bel Meadow (May 25).
