CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Governor Patrick Morrisey has announced the launch of the America250 Mural Project, a statewide effort to celebrate West Virginia’s history and heritage through public art.
The initiative invites all 55 counties to create hand-painted murals as part of a national celebration of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.
West Virginia is the first state to create a statewide mural trail specifically for the America250 celebration. Each county will be eligible for a $5,000 grant to support artist compensation and material costs.
“West Virginia‘s story is one worth telling, and I can’t think of a better time to share it than during the year of America’s 250th birthday,” said Governor Patrick Morrisey.
“I’m excited to join President Trump in celebrating this important milestone in our country’s history. I encourage each of our 55 counties to participate in this project and help us bring even more people to our shining state in the mountains.”
Murals completed by April 1, 2026, will be included in a statewide mural trail launch set for spring 2026.
“We’re thrilled to welcome every county to play a part in this meaningful celebration and can’t wait to see how each community brings its own unique voice to this legacy project,” said West Virginia Department of Tourism Secretary Chelsea Ruby.
“From natural beauty to deep cultural roots, these murals will display all that makes West Virginia truly Almost Heaven.”
The grants are being made available through a partnership between the West Virginia Department of Tourism and the National Endowment for the Arts.
County commissions will receive guidance from the State Arts Office this week. Communities and interested artists can learn more at wvtourism.com/250murals.
