UPDATE: Additional details have emerged regarding a juvenile who sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound late Tuesday afternoon.
The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office reports that the investigation scene in Chesapeake, WV has been processed and the Venable Avenue has been reopened after having been affected by the ongoing situation.
Investigators with the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office report that the victim in this incident, identified as a 5-year-old male, was transported to CAMC General Hospital following response of authorities to the scene.
The gunshot is said to have struck the child in the leg, and will require medical surgery. Nonetheless, medical personnel have reportedly advised the injuries sustained by the victim are non-life-threatening in nature.
The initial investigation into the situation appears to reveal that the shooting was self-inflicted by the 5-year-old juvenile. Investigators will be conducting work to determine the circumstances in which the incident occurred.
“The Kanawha County Prosecutors Office and Child Protective Services are working with detectives as they complete a thorough investigation,” said the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office, revealing that no charges have been pressed in relation to the situation at the time of writing.

CHESAPEAKE, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Authorities are currently investigating the scene of an incident where a juvenile is reported to have gained access to a handgun and shot themselves.
According to the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting occurred in the 12900 block of Venable Avenue in Chesapeake, WV.
Deputies with the department were dispatched to the residence at which the incident took place just before 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday after a call was placed to Metro 911 alerting that a juvenile had shot himself with a handgun.
Detectives with the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigative Section, along with members of the West Virginia State Police, are investigating and will reportedly release further information at a later time.F
No identifying information such as name or age has been disclosed with regard to the victim in the situation, though it was confirmed that the victim is a male juvenile and utilized a handgun in this incident. It is unclear at the time of writing if the incident was intentional.
