MARIPOSA COUNTY, CA (LOOTPRESS) – A punk singer goes on a bizarre rampage and touches a woman’s stomach, claiming that “the spirits led me to you, and your baby belongs to me.”
A disturbing incident unfolded on a seemingly ordinary Wednesday afternoon in the tranquil Buck Meadows area of Mariposa County that would send shockwaves through the local community. Around 1:45 pm, a 40-year-old man named Anthony Mehlhaff, hailing from Los Angeles, entered a local restaurant and approached a pregnant waitress.
In a bizarre and unsettling display, Mehlhaff reached out and touched the woman’s stomach, claiming that “the spirits led me to you, and your baby belongs to me.” He then ominously asked the waitress what time her break was, implying he would be waiting for her. This deeply unsettling encounter was just the beginning of a chaotic series of events that would unfold over the next several hours.
After the disturbing interaction with the pregnant waitress, Mehlhaff proceeded to steal several drinks from the restaurant and assaulted another employee before speeding off in his vehicle towards the direction of Yosemite National Park.
This set off a flurry of emergency calls to the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office starting around 3pm, with reports of a potential car chase, kidnapping, additional assaults, and the theft of other vehicles all occurring near the Fish Camp area.
Yosemite National Park rangers attempted to intercept Mehlhaff on Highway 41 within the park boundaries, but he evaded them, crashing his vehicle and stealing a bicycle in the Fish Camp region. In a bizarre move, Mehlhaff then removed his shirt, handed it to a bystander, and ominously declared, “You’ll want to keep this; I’m going to be famous.”
Mehlhaff’s rampage continued as he forced his way into the kitchen of the Tenaya Lodge, grabbing a knife and threatening the workers before making his way to a nearby creek area, where he stripped down to his underwear, removing his pants, wallet, and car keys. Undeterred, he then entered the Tenaya Lodge Clubhouse, ordering the customers to leave while he proceeded to vandalize the property.
Mehlhaff then stole the store manager’s car keys and attempted to kidnap the manager, assaulting him in a failed effort to force the manager to drive him away from the area. Fortunately, the manager was able to break free from Mehlhaff’s grasp.
Mehlhaff’s reign of terror continued as he stole the store manager’s vehicle and sped off towards Oakhurst, where he encountered a Tesla and engaged in extreme road rage, tailgating and ramming the vehicle. This prompted a response from the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Deputies, who ultimately were able to apprehend Mehlhaff after he crashed the stolen vehicle just outside of Oakhurst.
Even after his arrest, Mehlhaff’s erratic behavior continued, as he assaulted the deputies while being medically cleared at a local hospital. A subsequent search of Mehlhaff’s vehicle revealed the presence of an Enola Gay smoke grenade, prompting the involvement of the Merced Bomb Squad.
The Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with Yosemite National Park Service, the California Highway Patrol, and other local law enforcement agencies, worked tirelessly to bring this dangerous individual to justice and protect the community from his erratic and violent actions.
As Sheriff Jeremy Briese aptly stated, “This man drove all around our county terrorizing our visitors and community members. I am extremely happy that no one was seriously injured, this man’s behavior was erratic and dangerous. This is just a glimpse of what we encounter at any given time.”
The coordinated efforts of these law enforcement agencies undoubtedly prevented further harm and underscored the importance of strong partnerships in addressing such complex and dynamic situations.
