FAYETTEVILLE, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A prison sentence was issued on Monday, April 24, 2023, in relation to a June incident in which an officer was struck during an investigation.
The Fayette County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office reports that, on Monday Chief Circuit Judge Paul M. Blake sentenced Tyler Schoolcraft – 25 years old, of Deepwater, WV – to one to three years in the penitentiary for the felony crime of Second Offense Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer.
The Fayette County Prosecuting Attorney reports that Schoolcraft must serve a minimum of one year in prison before becoming eligible for parole. Schoolcraft issued a guilty plea for the crime in question on February 28, 2023.
Reports additionally indicate that, on June 22, 2022, an investigation was being conducted by an officer with the Montgomery Police Department with regard to a reported breaking and entering situation in the Cannelton area of Fayette County.
Schoolcraft was observed by the officer to have been walking along the in the area where the crime had reportedly taken place. Upon attempting to speak with Schoolcraft regarding the situation, Schoolcraft reportedly became combative, struck the officer, and refused to adhere to commands. Schoolcraft had previously pled guilty to the same offense on February 24, 2021.
The crime was investigated by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department and was prosecuted by Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Sarah F. Smith.
