ST. MARY’S, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The small picturesque town of St. Mary’s, West Virginia is home to one of the most unique sites around, street-running trains.
It’s normal to see trains running along the road or a river, but never through the middle of the street. In St. Mary’s, that’s exactly what happens.
A part of the CSX Ohio River Subdivision runs right through the middle of 2nd street in St. Mary’s for about a quarter of a mile and it is surely a sight to be seen.
The rail line sees a few trains each day and when you see the stoplights start flashing yellow and the train horn sounding, it’s time to move over as the heavy freight train is soon to take over the Downtown area.
The track has run through St. Mary’s for years from the steam era to present-day diesel power.
When rail was the most common means of travel and transport, this line would see several trains a day. Passenger trains even once rolled through the town on what were once B&O-owned rails.
St. Mary’s makes for a perfect day trip for those wishing to watch a train roll through the middle of town and explore the local shops and restaurants Pleasants County has to offer.
