Woodsdale Elementary has emerged as a leader in wellness, showcasing how schools can set the bar for their communities and the entire state. Through initiatives such as their Walking Club, Kids of Steel program, and annual Let’s Play 5k fundraiser, Woodsdale fosters a culture of inclusion, resilience, and long-term wellness. Their programs focus on more than physical activity, including hands-on nutrition education, mindfulness practices, and adaptive facilities, like an indoor rock wall and inclusive playground.
“This award reflects the dedication of their entire school community to prioritize the health and well-being of students while inspiring others across West Virginia,” said Gov. Jim Justice. “Woodsdale is going above and beyond to break generational barriers and show that with the right focus, health and wellness can become a foundation for future success.”
West Virginia Department of Health Secretary Sherri Young, DO, MBA, FAAFP, praised participating schools for their commitment to student wellness. “Every school that puts the health and wellness of their students at the forefront is a winner in my book. Woodsdale Elementary’s achievement sets an example for schools across our state, proving that a focus on health can inspire lasting change in communities and help break generational barriers to wellness.”
The $2,500 prize will allow Woodsdale Elementary to further their mission, whether by upgrading their inclusive playground, expanding fitness initiatives, or continuing to innovate with new wellness programs. The award ceremony took place at Woodsdale Elementary on Friday with representatives from the Department of Health, Department of Education, and Aetna Better Health in attendance to celebrate this inspiring achievement.
Todd White, CEO of Aetna Better Health of West Virginia, highlighted the importance of investing in student wellness and supporting schools like Woodsdale Elementary. “We are honored to support the West Virginia Healthy Habits Schools Contest and celebrate the tremendous work being done by schools like Woodsdale Elementary,” said White. “By prioritizing health and wellness, schools are creating a lasting impact not only on their students, but also on the entire community.
