BERKELEY COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Berkeley County Circuit Clerk Shelly Schoppert is encouraging residents to ignore a scam call threatening individuals with arrest for missing jury duty.
“Unfortunately, this is a recurring scam that continues to surface from time to time in our community. Berkeley County residents should know that they will always receive notification by text, e-mail and a personal phone call if they are selected to serve as a juror,” Berkeley County Circuit Clerk Shelly Schoppert said.
Three residents in less than an hour on Friday reported being contacted by the “Sheriff’s Department,” claiming warrants had been issued for their arrest, Schoppert said.
“We double-checked and determined the individuals who received the threats were not in the current jury pool for possible jury service,” Schoppert said.
One resident told authorities that a local phone number appeared on her Caller ID when she received a scam call, but Schoppert noted that it is not uncommon for “ghost” phone numbers to shield the actual source of the illicit phone calls.
“Residents should ignore these calls, and report them to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Department or another law enforcement agency,” Schoppert said.
