BECKLEY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The shooter responsible for the murder of a man outside a Beckley nightclub was sentenced to prison on Monday.
Ramon Edwards III was sentenced Monday to 40 years in prison for charges relating to the murder of Jalen Laqua Joe in 2019 according to Raleigh County Prosecuting Attorney Ben Hatfield. The victim was 23 years old at the time of the shooting.
The incident occurred outside the Mad Hatter Club on 410 Second Street in Beckley, WV on March 13th, 2019, and saw Edwards confirmed as a suspect early on in the investigation.
Multiple shots were fired in the exchange which initially saw Edwards charged with a staggering 13 counts of Wanton Endangerment along with First Degree Murder.
Edwards pleaded guilty to Second Degree Murder in October and was sentenced to a 40-year prison sentence, the maximum permissible under the circumstances, Monday by Tenth Judicial Circuit Court Judge Darl W. Poling, as confirmed by Hatfield.
Edwards was granted bond in the Summer of 2021 on the condition of home incarceration for which Edwards will be credited with time served.
The bond, the motion for which had been renewed by Edwards’ legal representation and which had been vehemently opposed by Hatfield, was set at $150,000 payable by cash or surety bond. This came in the wake of a delay in court proceedings due to the unavailability of the medical examiner in the case who had been tapped to testify.
