MERCER COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS)—Michael David Coffey was found guilty on Thursday in the case of a four month old who was shaken.
The trial began on Tuesday because of its journey through the docket because of COVID.
The baby now suffers from being permanently blind and the loss of his right side of his body from a stroke resulting from brain bleeding.
In April of 2018, Coffey was the then boyfriend of the mother. The mother left for work and came back to her baby in a lethargic state.
After a CAT scan in Princeton, it was determined that the baby had a fractured skull and was taken to Roanoke to receive more specialized care.
Mercer County Prosecuting Attorney Brian Cochran took thealmost three year case.
“Half of his brain is destroyed,” said Cochran.
Coffey is currently awaiting sentencing. The penalty for child abuse with serious bodily injury in West Virginia carries a sentence of two to ten years.
“I’m glad the baby and his family are receiving justice,” said Cochran.
