Summersville – Tuesday afternoon inside the Summersville Arena and Convention Center, the WVU Tech men’s basketball team ran its record to 17-2 with an 87-75 win over Oakland University.
Gunner Short led four Golden Bears in double figures with 24 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field to extend Tech’s winning streak to 14 games.
Oak Hill High School graduate Andrew Work riddled the Mighty Oaks, especially in the second half, attacking the basket for 19 points on just eight shots. Work was 7-of-8 from the free-throw line.
Andreas Jonsson knocked down five 3-pointers for 15 points and Thomas Hailey scored 10. Jonsson led the Golden Bears with seven rebounds.
Keondre’ King added nine points and Philip Mullins scored eight.
Content to try and run Tech off the 3-point line Tuesday, Oakland University took a beating in the paint getting outscored 44-20 on the day.
Although the Golden Bears took a 14-point lead at the 7:34 mark of the opening half, the Mighty Oaks roared back to take a brief one-point lead with 39 seconds left to play.
A jumper from Mullins gave Tech a 40-39 lead at the break.
The visitors refused to go away quietly and with just over 10 minutes to play, the game was tied 61-61.
Two scores by Work inside and a triple from Jonsson pushed the lead to seven points. A drive by Short made it a nine-point game and Oakland would get no closer than seven points the rest of the way.
The biggest lead of the game was 17 points when Short found Hailey for a slam with 2:03 to play.
JaMarcus Clark led Oakland City with 23 points and Nathaniel Schmittler added 15 points.
WVU Tech raised its River State Conference record to 8-0 and will travel to Alice Lloyd College (Ky.) Thursday for a 7:30 p.m. clash. The Eagles are 17-0 overall also sport an undefeated conference record.
