MERCER COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The Mercer County Coalition for Healthy Communities announced Monday the launch of a Vape Detection pilot program in Mercer County schools.
The program, developed in conjunction with Community Connections and Mercer County Schools, is funded through the Drug Free Communities (DFC) grant, and seeks to decrease use of tobacco and alcohol among the youth.
Implementation of the program will be seen throughout four high schools in Mercer County, as well as the Mercer County Technical Education Center.
Developed through technology provider ICAS Corp, the Vape Detection Devices are able to detect any chemicals burned by way of an electronic cigarette, including nicotine and THC.
Upon detection of substances, these devices will alert on-duty staff in real time through text message.
Another feature of the devices included by ICAS Corp are what the company refers to as a “bully alert.” This is an optional feature which will send an alert text to on duty staff upon detection of “unusual sound.”
Also featured with the Vape Detection Devices is data collection, which makes it possible to reveal where, when, and how often the burning of chemicals occur. The devices also feature built-in alarms to prevent tampering.
The Mercer County Coalition points out that this is only the first step in their mission to create safe, drug free communities within Mercer County.
