PRINCETON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Members of the Mercer County Commission assembled on Tuesday for the commission’s Regular Session meeting at which a proposed leash ordinance was considered once again.
Such an ordinance has been vigorously pursued for many months by Commissioner Greg Puckett, who has brought variations on the proposed law before the commission several times – the most recent instance after which the commissioner declared the ordinance to be, “dead.”
Commissioners Buckner and Archer have long taken issue with what has been characterized as a lack of enforceability as pertaining to the ordinance. Following a reading of the ordinance itself in its most recent form on Tuesday, both Buckner and Archer remained distinctly silent when the time came for a seconding of the motion to be heard in order for the ordinance to pass.
When asked if the ordinance should be brought before the commission at a later date, Archer indicated that the ordinance would still likely be unacceptable in its current form at a later date. Puckett then declared that he would not be bringing the proposal before the commission again until such a time as he was asked to do so.
With regard to a lack of enforceability, Puckett claims that he has spoken with law enforcement and that the ordinance would be enforceable. Archer, conversely, asserts that his most recent interactions with such officials gave indication that the ordinance would in fact not be enforceable.
Despite appearing outwardly frustrated as a result of what has become a prolonged and ultimately futile undertaking, Puckett appears to have come to terms with the decision of his colleagues not to pursue the leash law ordinance at the present time.
