DOBSON, NC (LOOTPRESS) – Surry County Government wishes to express condolences to the family of former County Manager Dennis N. Thompson who passed away on Thursday, October 5, 2023. Mr. Thompson was 84 years old. Born and raised in Surry County, Mr. Thompson’s tenure as County Manager remains the longest of all who have served in the position.
Mr. Thompson served Surry County for over 28 years as both Associate County Manager (February 5, 1979 to June 30, 1985) and County Manager (July 1, 1985 to December 31, 2003 and September 8, 2008 to June 29, 2012). His vision, foresight, planning and promotion of teamwork yielded growth and improvements for our community. These included the creation of a planning and zoning program, a human resources department, the opening of a new landfill, establishment of public water and sewer districts, capital improvements at public education facilities, construction and development of Fisher River Park, Surry County Government Center, Health and Nutrition Center, Resource Center, and the Judicial Center.
Mr. Thompson served on numerous boards and committees such as the Criminal Justice Partnership, Early Childhood Partnership, Economic Development Partnership Board of Directors, Economic Development Partnership Executive Committee, Natural Resources Committee, Northwest Piedmont Job Training Consortium, Recreation Advisory Committee, Surry Housing Consortium, and the Workforce Development Board.
Eddie Harris, Chairman of the Surry County Board of Commissioners, said “It was with great sadness I learned of Dennis’ passing. Through good times and bad, Dennis served as County Manager with competence, class, good ole Surry County values and a commonsense leadership style that transcended political parties. As a new commissioner in 2010, he taught me that a judicious, fair-minded, even-tempered approach to problems always served the citizens best. Most importantly, Dennis was mild mannered, kind, and the embodiment of a southern gentleman. Surry County was fortunate to have had Dennis and he will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”
Chris Knopf, County Manager, stated “Dennis was the consummate professional and conducted himself with dignity and respect each and every day. His contributions to our community are visible and utilized by citizens and employees daily. Dennis served as a significant mentor to me personally for over a decade; there is no doubt he contributed to where I am today professionally. His family is in my thoughts and prayers.”
Mr. Thompson’s service to Surry County followed that of his father, Neal Thompson, who served as Sheriff from 1954-1962.
Mr. Thompson’s family desires that memorials be directed to the Pilot Mountain Rescue and EMS.
