Shady Spring’s Todd Duncan and Greenbrier East’s Chylyn Pate were announced as finalists for the USA TODAY National Athlete of the Year on Friday afternoon.
This is the first year that the award has been presented, with statewide winners across 27 sports nominated for the honor.
The winner will be revealed on a live show that will take place on Aug. 5 and be hosted by former New York Giants defensive end Michael Strahan and Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end Rob Gronkowski.
Pate, a recent graduate of Greenbrier East was named the 2020 state player of the year by the West Virginia Sports Writer’s Association last fall.
Duncan, a graduate of Shady Spring, defended his Class AA title this past fall while also helping the Tigers to the Class AA team title.
