Active Southern West Virginia is hosting another virtual event to keep individuals motivated, active and healthy through the official end of winter, March 20. This event is a 30-day challenge that requires participants to be active every day from Feb. 19 to March 20.
Active Southern West Virginia, which creates various programs to increase opportunities and access to physical activities in southern West Virginia, recommends that adults try to complete at least 150 minutes of activity a week (22 minutes a day) and that children work towards at least 60 minutes of activity a day.
The organization says to break the activity into 10-minute sessions, mix up the activities and incorporate new workouts to feel energized and motivated throughout the day.
Individuals can sign up for the challenge either individually or as a team. After registering, participants will receive a racer email packet that includes several tools such as a digital photo frame to celebrate completing the challenge, individual or team profiles on RunSignUp, a competition report for the 30 days of activity, and Move Your Way resources for being active.
Challenge participants will also be entered into a raffle for sponsor prizes.
The challenge can be completed indoors and outdoors; however, research shows that exercising in colder air has some surprising benefits.
According to Edward-Elmhurst Health, exercising during the winter can increase endurance, burn more fat, and keep individuals from getting seasonal affective disorder (SAD).
Here are some of ways EEHealth says to stay active during the winter:
- Going for a walk at a mall.
- Bowling with friends or family.
- Roller skating.
- Signing up for a group class like yoga or Zumba.
- Taking the stairs as much as you can.
- Attending family events or activities happening in the community.
- Sledding, ice skating or snowshoeing.
- Going for a swim at an indoor pool.
- Volunteering at a local non-profit organization.
- Starting a home workout regimen.
