BECKLEY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The Rocky Horror Picture Show has been screened continuously since its release in 1975.
Fortunately for the people of Beckley, there will be a Special Halloween screening of the film at the Raleigh Playhouse and Theatre on October 28th beginning at 8 pm.
The legend that has become The Rocky Horror Picture Show began in 1973 in London as a musical play at a small studio above the Royal Court Theatre. The show was instantly popular and quickly spread all the way to Los Angeles, where it transitioned to the big screen. When the movie first aired in 1975, it was a commercial flop. Despite its poor performance, the film quickly became a cult classic. It began airing at midnight showings only on April 1, 1976, at New York’s Waverly Theatre and has been aired continuously ever since. It resonated with people who felt like they did not fit into mainstream society. Fans returned to watch it over and over and transformed the movie into a piece of performance theater. Fans would act out their favorite parts, arriving in costume, they would respond to characters’ lines, and throw props at the screen during the showing.
Despite the ups and downs of the pandemic shutdowns, the movie has managed to survive. Fans continue to yell at characters and pelt the screen with prop items. Despite being satirical and quite carefree, the film has become sentimental and important for generations of viewers. From its humble beginnings, the cult fanbase has grown The Rocky Horror Picture show into a phenomenon that has earned over $170 million worldwide after a 47-year run.
Beckley’s Halloween showing is being organized by Beckley Pride and Raleigh Playhouse and Theatre. Tickets are $5 each, and prop bags will be available at the door for an additional $5. Fans and the uninitiated alike are sure to enjoy the interactive experience.
