(LOOTPRESS) – Total U.S. coal exports increased from May to June by +5%: metallurgical coal exports increased by +14.2% month over month while thermal coal exports decreased by -4.1% from the previous month. Year to date, compared to the same six months of 2020, total U.S. coal exports are up +23%. Met coal exports are up +6.3% and thermal coal exports are up +47.4%.
Met coal exports to Europe declined from May by -26%. Compared to the same time in 2020, U.S. met coal shipments to Europe are off by -11.3%. U.S. shipments of met coal to North America also declined month over month by -27.2%. Year to date, compared to 2020, met coal shipments to North America are up +10%. Met coal exports to South America declined by -32.5% month over month. Compared to last year, total exports of met coal to South American are off -0.72%. Met coal shipments to Japan increased by >300% month over month. Compared to 2020, total U.S. met shipments to Japan are off by -3.8%. U.S. met coal exports to South Korea declined from May, with no shipments being reported in June. Compared to last year, exports of met coal to South Korea are off by -75%. Met coal shipments to India decreased by -37% month over month. Compared to the same time last year, met coal shipments to India are off by -25.3%. U.S. met coal exports to China increased from May by >200%. Compared to the same time last year, met coal shipments to China are up >800%.
U.S. thermal coal exports to Europe increased from May by +26.3%. Year to date, compared to 2020, U.S. thermal coal shipments to Europe are up +79.3%. Thermal exports to North America increased month over month by +23.2%. Compared to last year, total thermal coal exports to North America are up +11.3%. Exports of thermal coal to South America increased slightly from May by +7.3%. Total South American thermal coal shipments year to date are +5.2% higher than the same time in 2020. U.S. shipments of thermal coal to Japan also increased month over month by +71%. Compared to the same time in 2020, total thermal coal exports to Japan are up +65%. Thermal coal exports to South Korea increased month over month by +4.9%. Compared to the same six months of 2020, total thermal exports to South Korea are off by -23.9%. Thermal coal exports to India declined month over month by -43.8%. Compared to the same time last year, total coal exports to India are up +89.9%. Thermal coal shipments to China declined from the previous month by -2.8%. Compared to 2020, thermal coal shipments to China are up +100% (the U.S. reported no thermal coal exports to China in the first six months of 2020).
Average reported met coal export prices increased month over month by +13.1% (+$16.04). Average reported thermal coal export prices declined by -5.5% from May (-$3.30).
Quantified by export port / export customs district, met coal exports from Baltimore increased by +47% and from Hampton Roads by +16.4% month over month. Met coal export shipments from Mobile also increased by +29.7% from May. No metallurgical exports were reported from either New Orleans or Philadelphia in June. Met coal shipments from other ports and districts (Buffalo, Detroit, El Paso, Houston, Laredo, New York, San Diego, San Francisco, Savannah, Seattle, Wilmington, Cleveland, Charleston, Los Angeles) declined from May by -36.8%.
Compared to the same six months of 2020, total met coal shipments from Baltimore are up +6.7%, Hampton Roads by +3.8%, Mobile by +13.3%, New Orleans by +13.6% and other U.S. ports by +20%. No met shipments from Philadelphia have been reported for 2021.
Thermal coal exports from Baltimore declined month over month by -31.4% and from Hampton Roads by -37%. Thermal exports from Mobile increased after no tonnage exported in May. Thermal coal shipments from New Orleans also increased by +17.7% month over month. Thermal coal exports from other U.S. ports (Buffalo, Detroit, El Paso, Houston, Laredo, New York, San Diego, San Francisco, Savannah, Seattle, Wilmington, Cleveland, Charleston, Los Angeles) increased by +88% from May.
Compared to the same time in 2020, total U.S. thermal coal exports from Baltimore are up +59.2% and >200% from New Orleans. Thermal coal shipments from other U.S. ports are up +5.8%. Thermal coal exports from Hampton Roads are off by -8.9% and by -28.8% from Mobile.
