The 2023 election did not fair well for most Republicans. While a handful of GOP candidates made it across the finish line, the majority of the off-year election victories favored Democrat candidates and policies.
The Kentucky elections were headlined by Democrat Governor Andy Beshear winning re-election over Republican Attorney General Daniel Cameron. With 90% of precincts reporting, Beshear was ahead of Cameron 52.5% to 47.5%. The other statewide elections in Kentucky, however, actually favored Republicans. Republican Russell Coleman defeated Democrat Pamela Stevenson to replace Daniel Cameron as Attorney General. Also, in the Secretary of State’s race, incumbent Republican Michael Adams defeated Democrat Buddy Wheatley.
In Ohio, Issue 1, which creates a constitutional right to an abortion, easily passed 56.6% to 43.4%. While many counties voted against the amendment, the majority of the counties voting in favor were surrounding Ohio’s larger cities such as Columbus, Cincinnati, and Cleveland. Issue 2, which legalizes recreational marijuana, also passed at about the same margins.
