Gary Wayne “Speedy” Hornsby, age 71, of Shady Spring, WV, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, November 26, 2022, at Charleston Area Medical Center Neurological ICU following a short illness.
Gary was born in Cool Ridge on September 8, 1951, to the late Charlie and Freda Carr Hornsby of Shady Spring.
Gary attended Shady Spring High School and worked as a Diesel Mechanic for Carl Cato for more than 30 years in Rock Hill, SC until he retired. Gary loved spending time with his family, singing karaoke every chance he got, going fishing and he loved to sing the gospel song the Anchor Holds and Amazing Grace often. He was always smiling and had a genuine love for life. Special thank you to William Clay and his wife Tammy for looking after Gary for a number of years in their home.
He was a wonderful man, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, teacher, and friend. Gary will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
His life and legacy will forever be treasured by his ex-wife of more than 30 years, Brenda Alderman his sons, Gary, Jr and his wife, Mary of York, SC; Eric and his companion Tammy of Rock Hill, SC; and a daughter Anna Laura Hornsby of Lancaster, SC and 6 grandchildren, Troy Dylon, Zoey Marie, Alisha Dawn, Kevin, Rachel and Gary Hornsby III; 4 great grandchildren Corey, Kyla, Kruz, and Austin; four brothers, Tommy and his wife, Sheila, of Mechanicsville, Virginia, Tex of Shady Spring, Dean and his wife, Karen, of Shady Spring, Teddy of Beaver; two sisters, Barbara Rose and husband, Ronnie, of Beckley, and Betty McGraw and husband, Barry of Grandview and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins who will miss him dearly.
Gary was preceded in death by siblings Anna Lee, Doug, Joe, Jimmie, Kenny and Sonny.
