WOOD COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Police in West Virginia are warning the public of an ongoing scam where the scammers pose as law enforcement and even use the actual names of department members.
According to the Wood County Sheriff’s Office, another scam is affecting the area where people are calling local citizens identifying themselves as members of the Wood County Sheriff’s Office.
These individuals are using actual names of department members, or other assumed names advising persons they owe a fine, or that there is a warrant for their arrest.
They further claim that if the person does not pay a fine, or meet them somewhere to pay a fine they will be arrested.
Police say that this is a scam. The sheriff’s office does not collect fines or exchange money.
Several local people have already become victims of this scam. The incoming phone numbers can show that is a sheriff’s department number, this is a ghost line which is normally untraceable.
Police urged residents to always question anyone wishing to send or meet them to exchange money.
Police encourage residents to also advise your friends and family so they will not be victims of these types of scams.
